Dack,
I see you have upgraded to the screamin eagle air box, and slip
ons, that's a good start! I would recommend the andrews N-4 cams
they respond to a variation of 2500-6500 rpms. A good stock carb
upgrade is the thunder slide kit - replaces the stock metal slide
with a lighter plastic slide, jet kit and spray nozzle. This allows
for faster response. As for as the ignition goes, I would suggest
the compu-fire single fire. It comes
w/ignition, plug wires, and coil.
Budget of $1,200.00
Parts- $816.85 plus tax
Labor- $300.00 Total- $1,183.01
This will keep you within your budget
and give you a lot more of what you want.

RE:
2002 XL 1200 Custom - Modifications: Stg. One Kit w/ slip on mufflers.
Dear
Kirk,
After
considering all possible performance upgrade combinations, I came
up with the following to get the best value for the money ($1200.00
cap):
First change the cams out. A set of mild bolt in cams would work
fine with the stock heads - spec's being .500" lift with
about 255-260 duration at 053", it would give good midrange
and pull to 6200 rpm. I would change the exhaust to a 2:1 Thunderheader;
it will make the cam come alive in the midrange. Carb and intake
will work fine, as well as the stock ignition at this stage. I
will do a before and after Dyno so you can see the results. I
will re-jet carb and set ignition timing according to the motor's
needs. This would give around a 10 horsepower upgrade.

PROJECT
UPGRADE #1
LETS TAKE A LOOK AT DACK'S BIKE. HIS SETUP IS NOT
THAT UNCOMMON. A FEW LOCAL PERFORMANCE SHOPS SHOULD BE
ABLE TO SHOW A COPY OF DYNO RUNS MADE WITH SIMILAR
VEHICLES. IF NOT, DACK MAY WANT TO RUN HIS BIKE TO GET
A BASE LINE OF HIS VEHICLES PERFORMANCE. THEN HE COULD
COMPARE HIS BIKE WITH SOME THAT ARE MODIFIED WITH HIS
POTENTIAL UPGRADE.
WHAT IS SIGNIFICANT???
GIVEN A XLH1200, WITH PIPES, REJET AND A HIGH FLOW
AIR CLEANER, YOU ALREADY HAVE A GOOD POWER TO WEIGHT
RATIO. THE BIKE PROBABLY MAKES ABOUT 70 HP AND ABOUT
THE SAME TORQUE. REMEMBER, THIS IS MY BEST GUESS. I
SUGGESTED A DYNO RUN TO CURB THE "CONFLICTING INFO".
TO ADD BOLT-IN CAMS, WOULD INCREASE HP BY 5 TO 8, AND
MAYBE THE SAME FOR TORQUE. THE QUESTION IS, AT WHAT
RPM WILL THESE NUMBERS OCCUR? WITH THE WAY THE BIKE IS
SETUP NOW, THE PEAK TORQUE HAPPENS LOW IN THE POWER
BAND. THE ADDITION OF CAMS MAY RAISE THE RPM AT WHICH
PEAK TORQUE OCCURS. THIS WILL TRANSLATE IN REVING THE
MOTOR HIGHER TO ACHIEVE POWER.
WILL THE INCREASE IN POWER BE WORTH THE TRADE OFF OF
A SLIGHT LOSS OF STREETABILITY?
WOULD THE END RESULT BE "SIGNIFICANT" ENOUGH TO
JUSTIFY THE POSSIBLE 1200 DOLLARS SPENT?
CAN DACK FIND SOMEONE WITH THE UPGRADE ALREADY
INSTALLED ON THEIR BIKE SO HE COULD TAKE A TEST RIDE?
I RECOMMEND DACK DO SOME MORE RESEARCH BEFORE
SPENDING.
AZHD
CAN INSTALL XLH BOLT-IN CAMS FOR 325.00 DOLLARS
LABOR PLUS PARTS. WILL IT RUN GOOD?? SURE, BUT WILL IT
BE WHAT DACK IS LOOKING FOR? HARD TO SAY.

Following is what was presented to the
Dealers and shops here in the valley
Project
#1 2002 Sportster custom
This objective, should you accept, is to provide your recommendations
of how to best upgrade this bike.
This is a great way to get your name in front of a large audience.
Currently I get about 6,000 to 10,000 hits per day. I know
that this project will create interest, as a lot of the people
that I talk to would like to increase their power. Now you
have a forum to provide your technical knowledge.
Please, I need this information back by Feb 28th. This
will then give me time to post the information on my website
at phoenixbikers.com.

Objective;
How to best upgrade stage II with $1,200.00
I
currently have a 2002 XL 1200 Custom with about 800 miles.
I have added the Screaming Eagle High Flow Air Cleaner and
the Screaming Eagle slip-on mufflers and had the carb jetted.
Most of my riding will be local and occasionally two-up. I
was thinking of installing either Andrews N4 or Screaming
Eagle bolt in cams, change the ignition and coil. I spoke
with a few shops and get conflicting information on if this
will make a significant increase. I have set aside about $1,200.00
for the project
Should
you respond to the request, please do so in writing. Please
include a list of the parts, kits, procedures and approximate
hours associated with the upgrade. Also include why you think
this is the best solution for this upgrade. If possible, your
best guess as to the actual increase.
I will send this request to all of the Harley Davidson Dealers
in the valley and all of the Custom Bike shops listed on Custom
Bikes page at phoenixbiker.com
After I get all of the responses, I will publish them on the
web at phoenixbikers.com. I assure you that no one will know
who responded or what the response was until it is published.
